It has a bad reputation. It’s politicized and tainted with racial slurs. Recently, it’s even held people hostage. The bottom line: SNAP benefits save lives. But like anything created to help the poor, a scammer found a money-making flaw in the system.
Authorities say Atlanta influencer Shawty Dred created 350 fake SNAP accounts using stolen identities. He even became a licensed SNAP retailer after sending SNAP cards to addresses around Atlanta. The influencer allegedly duped the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services into giving him approximately $4.6 million in SNAP benefits through “fraudulently established beneficiary accounts, reports claim.
